Strategy game recommendation: Total War/World at war mix

Ok so I had the urge the play a strategy game yet I can't find a decent one I went to FileFront and browsed their Strategy games section and after looking at over 80 games I found nothing to my liking.

I love strategy games that don't completely dictate your gameplay like Total War series where you can go as you please and you have the ability to build and field massive armies. Another strategy game i loved was World at war it was not as open and free as Total war but it allowed you some free space to move how you decided.

I'm looking for something similar to Total War series big map, able to make big armies and with some freedom of play.

I don't care for the time setting any period/age/conflict.
