Learning to take a deeper step into programming - advice please.

I am currently learning Data Structures in Java, and have good enough experience in Python, but I want to take the step into designing and programming a game. I plan to at least make a game like Fire Emblem or Mother series - similar in execution and style. I was hopeful in garnering some advice on what programming principals or software I could potentially use start bring my ideas into fruition. Thank you in advance.
